Berkshire Scout Enterprises was formed in 1985 by adult members of the Scout Association in Berkshire in response to growing unemployment amongst young people. It is a company limited by guarantee and a registered charity with the following purpose: 'To educate and train young persons, resident in the Royal County of Berkshire and surrounding areas who, through their social or economic circumstances, are in need of or unable to gain employment or wish to further their education. Also to establish and support schemes and centres where such persons may be trained in employment.' Initially the company was a provider for the Government funded Community Programme and when this was terminated in 1988 became a sub-contractor for Employment Training Schemes run by the newly founded Thames Valley Enterprises. Subsequently the company became a provider for Employment Action in the Reading, Aylesbury and High Wycombe areas. Until 2008 the company combined its operations with that of Scout Enterprises (Western) Ltd, an identical company whose head office is in Bristol. This enabled it to expand into Employment Services Programmes which they currently operate throughout England and Wales. Starting with the successful initiative of a mobile Job Club, contracts were awarded for Job Cubs in thirty locations in Southern England and North Wales. It also conducted Jobsearch seminars, Job Plan Workshops and Restart courses. The company was the organiser of the 1994 Reading Careers Convention and managed the Reading Centre for the Unemployed. The company undertakes project management seeking funding opportunities to expand it aims and objectives. Projects funded by the European Social Fund GB have included Capacity Building which assisted with the development of NVQ's offered to clients on government funded programmes and Programme of Integration which sought to improve communications between voluntary organisations and the public and private sectors for the benefit of long term unemployed. It now manages Building Futures and Reboot, practical training opportunites for unemployed and disabled people, both part funded by the European Social Fund. The Company provides facilites and premises for its Resource Centres in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire where a large range of government funded programmes for unemployed and disabled people are available. Berkshire Scout Enterprises uses its resources and expertise to provide practical support to Scouting and other voluntary and charitable organisations in the UK and other parts of the world. |
